Biography

Shannon's work focuses broadly on aesthetics and war-related violence, with an emphasis on Sri Lanka. Her research draws on poetry and performance to uncover artistic strategies of dissent that expose and challenge narratives and histories erased under nationalist regimes. For her Pembroke Seminar project, she will use performance studies methods to analyse the rewriting of public and cultural memory and landscape in northern Sri Lanka, looking at competing claims around memorialization in relation to government/ military monuments and Tamil civilian memorials that mark the Sri Lankan civil war.
