The Friends of the Pembroke Center are Brown University alumnae/i, parents, and friends who support the intellectual mission of the Pembroke Center through annual gifts. Since its founding, the Pembroke Center has enjoyed and been strengthened by the support, engagement, and advice of this broad and dedicated community. The Friends' work has helped the Pembroke Center train a keen eye on the historical record, including here at Brown, while opening up possibilities for the future.

Giving by Friends of the Pembroke Center directly impacts students, scholars, members of the public, and researchers, both here at Brown and far beyond campus.

Friends have been crucial in building the Pembroke Center's postdoctoral program, which is a vital part of our teaching and research mission. Sa Whitley, the 2020-21 Nancy L. Buc '65 Postdoctoral Fellow, taught the undergraduate course "Conversations in Trans/Feminisms: Theories, Cultures, & Politics," engaged with an interdisciplinary, intergenerational group of scholars in the Pembroke Seminar "Narrating Debt," worked on transforming the dissertation "The Collective Come-Up: Black Queer Placemaking in Subprime Baltimore" into a book, and organized public humanities events while in residence at the Pembroke Center.

Lyle Cherneff '21 won both the Ruth Simmons Prize and the Joan Wallach Scott Prize for his stellar Gender and Sexuality Studies thesis “The Ties That Bind: Incest and Family-Making in the Postbellum South.” Friends of the Pembroke Center gifts allow the center to recognize and encourage pathbreaking work like this.

Uppity Wimmin for the ERA — Friends of the Pembroke Center giving has greatly strengthened the Pembroke Center Archives, which preserves and promotes women's history and maintains the Christine Dunlap Farnham Archive and the Feminist Theory Archive in partnership with the Brown University Library.

The Friends of the Pembroke Center help conceive of and organize events like "Making News: Adding Diverse Voices to Mainstream Media." These events feature notable alumnae/i whose experiences, work, and insights help us think in new, more informed ways about issues of critical concern.

Pembroke Seminar Fellows in "Color" — Friends of the Pembroke Center help support the Pembroke Seminar, the center's signature research forum. Undergraduates (pictured here), graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and visiting scholars convene weekly over the course of a year to explore a topic of pressing concern through an interdisciplinary, transnational lens.

Helis Sikk and student in Feminist Digital Humanities — The Gender and Sexuality Studies program curriculum is continually refreshed with new courses by faculty including Pembroke Center postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars.
