The Friends of the Pembroke Center are Brown University alumnae/i, parents, and friends who support the intellectual mission of the Pembroke Center through annual gifts. Since its founding, the Pembroke Center has enjoyed and been strengthened by the support, engagement, and advice of this broad and dedicated community. The Friends' work has helped the Pembroke Center train a keen eye on the historical record, including here at Brown, while opening up possibilities for the future.

Emily Mitamura

Friends have been crucial in building the Pembroke Center’s postdoctoral program, which is a vital part of our teaching and research mission. Emily Mitamura, 2023-24 Shauna M. Stark ’76, P’10 Postdoctoral Fellow, taught the course “Asian/American Feminisms” with an emphasis on expressive culture, power, and the Cold War. The class centered the work of Asian/American artists, thinkers, and practitioners who are critiquing, queering, and remaking relationships to history that haunt global political life. Mitamura is now a Consortium for Faculty Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow in Gender, Sexuality, Women's Studies at Bowdoin College.

Alexandra Lehman ’24 (Gender and Sexuality Studies, International & Public Affairs) received the Helen Terry MacLeod Research Grant for her thesis, “Imagined Bodies in Imagined Communities: (Re)Producing the Nation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.” Friends of the Pembroke Center gifts allow the Center to recognize and encourage path-breaking work like this.

Friends of the Pembroke Center giving has greatly strengthened the Pembroke Center Archives, which advances the capacity for research and teaching on women, gender, and feminist scholarship in the University library system. In 2020, the Pembroke Center Archives began to work with Advisory Council member Professor Johanna Fernandez ’93 to bring her papers and those of incarcerated journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal to the Brown campus.

The Friends of the Pembroke Center help conceive of and organize events like “Undue Burden: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America.” These events feature notable alumnae/i and faculty whose experiences, work, and insights help us think in new, more informed ways about issues of critical concern.

Friends of the Pembroke Center help support the Pembroke Seminar, the Center's signature research forum. Undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and visiting scholars convene weekly over the course of a year to think together in fresh ways, advance understanding, and transform how significant questions are confronted and addressed through an interdisciplinary, transnational lens.

The Gender and Sexuality Studies program curriculum is continually refreshed with new courses by faculty including Pembroke Center postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars. Here, Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice of Gender and Sexuality Studies Sarah Gamble works with students in her course, “Gender-Based Violence Prevention.”
