Areti Georgopoulos
What do you do? I am a judge for the State of Minnesota in the Paid Leave Program. I hold appeal hearings and make decisions on people's eligibility for Paid Leave benefits and employer's participation in the program.
How did the GNSS concentration shape your career? Being a Women's Studies concentrator (the precursor to GNSS) prepared me exceptionally well to be an advocate for social justice and a judge. For years, I ran my own employment law firm focusing on civil rights, representing clients who faced workplace discrimination due to their sex, sexual orientation, and other protected classes. My work was directly informed by my education on gender, gender bias, and systems of inequality. This education continues to be critical in my role as a judge.
