Biography

Emerson Yuan-Jhen Lee (he/him) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Anthropology at Brown University, where he also earned his MA. He holds a BA in Drama and Theatre from National Taiwan University. His research interests include writing systems, minoritized languages, language revitalization, and the performing arts. His MA paper, “Performing the Standard: Script Politics, Creative Labor, and Identity in Taiwanese Theatre,” examines how the standardization of written Taiwanese shapes new dynamics and power relations within theatrical contexts of language revitalization. Drawing on his previous work as a theatre director, actor, dialect coach, and radio host, he seeks to bring interdisciplinary practical experience into conversation with anthropological theories and methods.
